Beware, scammers are getting more and more creative. My goals are to share local Yuma and Nation wide scams. Check here for latest scams and please share known scams here iotsecureyuma@gmail.com
Before we get into the different types of scams, remember these tips
Be very careful on giving out personal information such as credit card information and birthdays.
Someone will never ask you for your username and password
Be wary on clicking on links. This can send you to malicious sites
Payments will never be in the form of a gift card (ie Bestbuy, Google Play, etc...)
Be careful of text, emails and calls that are requesting money. This could be in the form of tolls, IRS payments, or UPS package deliveries.
Phishing - Email Smishing - Tex Messages Vishing - Phone Calls
All of these are used to impersonate legitimate organizations to trick you into giving up personal information or clicking on malicious links
These often come through as offering work from home for unusually high pay per day
Crypto currency is one of the easiest ways for a scammer to steal your money. Be weary on payments requested. Also be weary on "Free" crypto sent to you where they get your bank account information or crypto wallet info and steal your hard earned money that way.
Scammers pretend to be someone in authority, such as a government official, law enforcement officer, or a company representative, to scare you into sending money immediately.
Remember, scammers are often pushy and this can be one of the first signs
Fake accounts are created online where they "Get to know you" and then an emercency comes up where they need money. With AI getting so good, they are able to deepfake images of an attractive person with audio that seems real. Be very cautious
Thieves steal your SSN, and Credit Card numbers to commit fraud in your name. If able, never send this information online unless you know who you are sending it to and the website is secure (HTTPS). If it starts with (HTTP), then it is not a protected site.
If it is too good to be true then it most likely is. My Nana has unfortunatley fell for this scam multiple time where you send a small amount of money in for an item that would typically cost much more and then you never get it. They also have you personal information and credit card at this point.
Scammers contact you to tell you how you won a prize but must pay a "Fee" to claim it.
Scammers send a fake check and then contact you saying they "Over paid" you. They request you cash it and send money back. This check is not checked at the time and ends up being fake but you have sent real money from your account by then.
